Integrated researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte). Researcher on the project fAIces – Facial Recognition Technologies: Etho-Assemblages and Alternative Futures, coordinated by Helena Machado under a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant and based at CIES-Iscte. Holds a PhD in Communication and Contemporary Culture from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Beira Interior, within the LabCom – Communication and Arts research unit, and at the Communication Institute of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (ICNOVA-FCSH). Principal Investigator of the project Vigi_Portugal – Video Surveillance, Data, and Privacy in Public Spaces in Portugal, funded through the Exploratory Project Call of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Has teaching experience at various universities in Brazil and Portugal. Previously worked as a researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) on the project Data Protection in Digital Health Services. Holds a Master’s degree in Communication and Society from the Federal University of Sergipe and a Bachelor's degree in Social Communication, with a specialization in Multimedia Journalism, from the State University of Bahia. Coordinator of the Center for Communication, Democracy, and Citizenship at UFBA. Currently serves as Director of Projects at Intercom – the Brazilian Society for Interdisciplinary Studies in Communication. His research focuses on communication, digital technologies, race and racism, journalism, communication policies, media and human rights, community media, and the political economy of communication. In 2019, he was awarded the Senator Abdias Nascimento Commendation by the Legislative Assembly of Sergipe for his academic contributions to the defense of racial equality. In 2022, he received the Ancestralities Research Appreciation Award, promoted by Itaú Cultural and the Tide Setúbal Foundation, for coordinating a research project on digital technologies and rural territories in Brazil.
