Ricardo Resende is an Associate Professor and coordinator of the Master in Digital Construction at the School of Applied Digital Technologies of Iscte, and an integrated researcher at ISTAR-Iscte, having coordinated the creation of the bachelor's degree in Digital Technologies and Sustainable Built Environment. Co-founder of Zumer, a pioneering technology and software startup for the construction sector, he focuses his work on research and consultancy in BIM, with emphasis on information management and use, process automation and sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), also covering capture and modelling technologies such as photogrammetry and the use of drones.
He coordinated the SECClasS project — Portugal's national classification system for construction — is an active member of CT197 (Portugal's technical committee for BIM standardisation) and sits on the board of buildingSMART Portugal, where he takes part in several working groups: openBIM and Sustainability, BIM for Underground Works, and Work Breakdown Structure. Between 2021 and 2027 he provides consultancy for the digital twin of Lisbon's General Drainage Plan.
He holds a degree in Civil Engineering (IST, 2000) and a master's in Structural Engineering (IST, 2003). He began his career at the Modelling and Rock Mechanics Unit of the Concrete Dams Department of the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), where he developed the research leading to his PhD in Civil Engineering (University of Porto, 2010). It was in this work on numerical and physical modelling of structures that he built the foundation of a path he would later carry into the digital domain — from simulating structural behaviour to modelling and managing information across the entire construction process. He completed the BIM Management programme of the Engineers Asociation (2016) and the Business Management Programme at AESE Business School (2022). He currently has 32 indexed publications in Scopus, 530 citations and an h-index of 14.
