Rodrigo Vieira de Assis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Research Methods at Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon and an Integrated Researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte). He is currently a member of the coordination team of the thematic line Inclusion, Equity and Citizenship (LT2) of the Associate Laboratory SocioDigital Lab for Public Policy.
He serves as an academic member (vogal docente) of the Standing Committee of the Pedagogical Council of Iscte (2025-2027) and of the Pedagogical Committee of the School of Sociology and Public Policy (2025-2027), and is also a faculty representative on the Council of the PIONEER Alliance.
Within the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS), he is a member of the Council of Ethics, serving as an alternate board member (2025-2027).
He has been actively involved in national and international research projects, participating in collaborative networks with European, Latin American, and North American institutions, with a focus on social inequalities and stratification, the world of work, social values and attitudes, and social dynamics in urban contexts.
His current research interests centre on the reproduction of social inequalities, the sociopolitical attitudes of social classes, and the relationship between labour precariousness and social protection.
His work addresses social phenomena across multiple scales: at the micro level, he explores social trajectories, life narratives, and processes of individuation, seeking to understand experiences, perceptions, and everyday practices; at the macro level, he investigates the reproduction of social inequalities, as well as patterns, trends, and structural changes in attitudes, perceptions, and practices in stratified societies.
Methodologically, he adopts multifaceted approaches, drawing on intensive, extensive, and mixed research designs. His experience includes studies based on survey research and in-depth interviews, participant observation, and urban ethnography, combined with a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods supported by specialised software (SPSS, JAMOVI, MAXQDA, among others).
He has also been engaged in methodological innovation in the social sciences, through the design and teaching of courses and training programmes, as well as through publications aimed at promoting best practices in research methods and data analysis in sociology.
