Collective bargaining is a central element of the Western European Social Model. It can be seen as the paramount path of employees' participation in the distribution of wealth and in the organisation of work. During the past decades, collective bargaining has lost part of its regulatory capacity, but it still bears the potential to perform its emancipatory and redistributive role. In view of the present state of rapidly growing inequality and proliferation of precarious work relations collective bargaining is a central resource for the preservation and renewal of the existing social model. Based on the concrete experience in Portugal since the democratic transition (1974-75). This lecture will discuss the dynamics of collective bargaining and its role in the economy and society.
