The Belt and Road Initiative has been one of the main Chinese foreign policy mechanisms in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations 2, continuing a centuries-long tradition of interactions between China and the region. A relevant aspect of this interaction is the migration of Chinese ethnic groups to the region, which over the centuries have established themselves as economic conglomerates and developed the bamboo network, a network of informal relationships within these Chinese overseas communities. Through an interdisciplinary analysis, centered on the joining of the disciplinary fields of history, Chinese cultural studies and international relations, this research proposal analyses the interaction between China, the bamboo network and the BRI in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, between 2013 and 2024. This analysis will allow us to understand how these groups might have influenced the implementation of BRI projects in these states and their degree of contribution to the expansion of Chinese soft power.
