This project is developed within a PhD scholarship with the funding reference UI/BD/154510/2022.
This doctoral project proposal will seek to deepen discussions on the topic of temporary migration and return to the country of origin of Guinean-Bissau students who have graduated abroad in the last ten years. First, it will be necessary to take a broader view of the topic, identifying the countries that have received and educated the most Bissau Guinean students in the last decade. To do so, we will use snowball sampling, then focus on the specific cases of two countries - Brazil, through the Undergraduate Student Agreement Programme (PEC-G) and Postgraduate Student Agreement Programme (PEC-PG) and graduates of the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony (UNILAB), as well as Bissau-Guinean students who have graduated in Portugal.
Upon returning to their country of origin, emigrants (in this case, Guinean-Bissau students) may encounter various changes both in physical spaces and in their interpersonal relationships (Silva et al, 2015). Therefore, we will seek to understand the impact on Guinean society of these young people receiving higher education abroad; the motivations for returning to Guinea-Bissau; compare and analyse the migratory experience of students educated in Brazil with students educated in Portugal; examine their new challenges upon their return and the ways in which the temporary immigration experience abroad reorganises the trajectory of these graduates. In methodological terms, we will adopt case studies and ethnographic methods as our research methods, and a field trip to Guinea-Bissau will be conducted to carry out the research. As for data collection techniques, we will work with qualitative methodology; documentary collection; ethnographic methods including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with focus groups and case studies; and the snowball sampling methodological technique.
It is hoped that the results obtained will contribute further to discussions on return migration and, in the specific context of Guinea-Bissau, that the country will create opportunities for the integration and inclusion of these young graduates in the diaspora.
