Portuguese involvement in US-sponsored international broadcasting initiatives during the Cold War: RARET 1951–1996.
Description

This project was developed within a PhD scholarship with the funding reference 2022.11462.BD.

International broadcasting played a central role in US initiatives to contain communism and Soviet expansionism during the Cold War. The Portuguese authorities were partners in these initiatives from the outset, granting a broadcasting licence to Sociedade Anónima de Rádio Retransmissão (RARET). This, in turn, became the front organisation under which Radio Free Europe (RFE) operated from Portugal between 1951 and 1996. However, the history of Portuguese participation in American broadcasting initiatives remains a significant gap in the literature. This project aims to rectify this gap by investigating the role of RARET in Portuguese-American relations, as well as assessing the extent of the Portuguese contribution to the radio war between the US and the USSR in European skies throughout this period.
