In spite of a recent slowdown foreign direct investment from rising China in to Europe has been growing exponentially over the past decade. It ranges from manufacturing, energy, utilities and transport, to financial services, real estate and sports and has been expanding from acquisitions of European firms to greenfield and portfolio investment. The perceived challenges posed by these investments has led to increasing political and media attention, including calls for EU vetting and regulation of acquisitions.   Academic research on the phenomenon is however lagging behind these developments. Existing studies moreover tend to have a mono-disciplinary, national or sectoral focus. Over-arching conceptions of the interconnections between investments in multiple sectors and the often cross-European nature and intent of Chinese investments, as well as their (geo)political implications, is almost entirely absent. This does not augur well for the formulation of appropriate policy responses direly needed to engage constructively with rising China.   In the light of these scientific gaps and policy needs and by bringing together the leading and pioneering researchers from across Europe and beyond (e.g. China, USA), the aim of this Action is to:(a) pool current and stimulate further research on China’s deepening economic engagements with Europe (b) develop an interdisciplinary, holistic, cross-sectoral and pan-European understanding of the variegated impacts and strategies associated with these engagements; (c) comprehend the likely political and geo-political consequences of these; and (d) generate input on the policy implications of these issues involving relevant agencies from the EU, member countries, business, trade unions and other interested parties.

Main Objective: SyMat will investigate the lectromagnetic properties of new classes of metamaterials and metasurfaces. They are made of periodic cells invariant under higher symmetries, such as glide or twist symmetries. As an example, while a periodic structure is invariant under translations, a glide-symmetric structure is also invariant under a translation and a mirroring. These symmetries lead to marvelous uncommon properties: ultra large bandwidth of operation, reduced losses, scanning capabilities, and enhanced stopband for Electromagnetic Bandgap materials. They have the potential to meet the expectation of new communication devices.

O eixo Serviço Social, Empreendedorismo Social e Inovação Social é promissor, do ponto de vista do potencial de relação entre os termos, e relativamente inexplorado. Em 2015, com a criação da UC Empreendedorismo e Integração Social, optativa do programa de doutoramento em Serviço Social, iniciou-se um trabalho de reflexão neste domínio, que tem vindo a ser consubstanciada em diversas iniciativa que se procuram organizar agora, sob um tronco comum, dando-lhe um carácter mais sistemático. Destas iniciativas destacam-se: - O Seminário Internacional “Serviço Social de/na Empresa: tradição e inovação de um campo em mudança” (realizado a 23 de novembro de 2017 no ISCTE-IUL); - A orientação de duas teses de doutoramento: “Inovação em Serviço Social: potencialidades e limites do empreendedorismo (social) como estratégia de integração social” (Antonela Jesus, concluída em 2019); “Serviço Social e Empreendedorismo: práticas, perceções e contributos” (Cristina Nascimento, iniciada em 2017); - O projecto “Cross-national social work and social innovation platform: social work curricula improvement by co-creation" (com financiamento de 6000€ pela EASSW); - O projecto Parcerias para o Impacto (em fase de candidatura). É, ainda, nossa intenção materializar os contributos do Seminário Internacional “Serviço Social de/na Empresa: tradição e inovação de um campo em mudança” em formato de livro, compilando os discursos de vários profissionais participantes, mas também de outros assistentes sociais com atividade profissional em entidades de empreendedorimo e inovação social, responsabilidade social e empresarial, com quem entretanto se foram estabelecendo contactos.
