The purpose of the project is to update and increase the measuring capabilities of the Instrumentation and Measurement Group - Institute of Telecommunications - Lisbon. The Group develops research and development mainly in six major areas of Metrology: analog-to-digital conversion, measurement of electric quantities, measurement of non-electric quantities, data acquisition and processing, telemetry and automated measuring systems. The Group is also increasingly engaged is assisting Portuguese industry and services.The equipment proposed for acquisition includes two type of items: general purpose instruments and dedicated instruments. While the general purpose instruments proposed aim at the update and increase of flexibility and capabilities of existing measuring means, the dedicated equipment pretends to overcome major measuring limitations in two domains: analog-to-digital conversion and measurement of non-electric quantities for environmental quality monitoring.

FASHION ON-LINE aims at demonstrating by systematic benchmarking and the deployment of selected pilots the efficiency of innovative technologies in overcoming the main obstacles to broad adoption of B2C e-commerce by fashion SME retailers, their business partners and consumers, namely the size & fit problem (related to customers body size and shape) and the product description problem(fabric colour, garment style).Ten pilots will be deployed in Spain, Italy, Portugal & Greece, implementing novel Internet technologies for clothing products description. Representatives of Regional Authorities from regions with pronounced presence of Textile-Clothing SMEs will monitor the progress of the project, either directly (as members), or through their contacts with the regional Associations. Objectives: The main project technological objectives are: a) To benchmark emerging technologies enabling size identification from body measurements, simple Virtual try-on accurate & appealing e-catalogues of clothing items, accurate on-line colour reproduction; b) To deploy 10 pilots in Spain, Italy, Portugal & Greece, implementing novel Internet technologies for clothing products description; c) To develop a portal, supporting & encouraging SMEs to adopt B2C e-commerce featuring a Generic fashion site demonstrator, comprehensive implementation information & guidelines, links to technology providers & benchmarking results (links to Technical Centres), continuous technology updates & on-line Consultancy facilities. The JPEG 2000 Open Standard concept goes beyond image compression only. Parts 1 and 2 concern basic technical elements for image compression and file format, Part 3 provides a solution to extend Parts 1 and 2 to motion, Part 4 and 5 are technical complements while Part 6 addresses mixed raster images. A new set of 4 Parts has recently been initiated thanks to an intense European activity. The 2KAN project has addressed all 4 new Parts (Part 8 JPSEC – Security, Part 9 – interactivity JPIP, Part 10 Floating Point and Volumetric Imaging, Part 11 JPWL – Wireless) in terms of requirements, typical applications, user interface, protocols and signalling, use of metadata and required algorithms. Each part has been addressed by a common technical management workpackage and by a specific workpackage creating a reference software and appropriate tests and evaluation. It will also add major enhancements to the public JPEG website (www.jpeg.org), with the twin goals of encouraging a European dimension to the site, and allowing it to become self-financed through sponsorship and specific commercial services.
