This project aims to quantify, examine and analyse labor relations in Portugal and the Lusophone World in the contemporary period, highlighting, in particular, the ways in which manpower and industrial relations have changed over time and adapted to social, economic and political shifts in Portugal and the Portuguese speaking world in the last two centuries. The Lusophone World is defined here broadly as the Portuguese speaking countries across the globe, and more strictly as the territories of the former Portuguese empire. The focus on the various Lusophone countries is a key element to this project as allow us to analyse these territories in comparative perspective, both due to the longevity of the Portuguese colonial system and the economic relations between these countries, which in most cases have lasted beyond independence (Brazil, 1822, India, 1961, Portuguese African colonies, 1975). This project will, in particular, help us to emphasize the depth and strength of these relationships, not only between the Lusophone countries, but also between the latter and their bordering regions and nations. By building and providing access to a global database on the development of labor relations and manpower in Portugal and the Lusophone world this project will fill an important gap in modern social sciences literature. This project will also make an significant contribution to better our understanding of the workforce composition, the evolution of its training and qualification, its productivity and the factors explaining changes in productivity, as well as its ability to innovate, and adapt to new forms of production, and the economic and social situation of the home societies. Following general European policy directives to democratize access to scientific knowledge and facilitate open access, all data collected by this project will also be made available online on the webpage of the Portuguese Institute of Contemporary History. Finally, by being associated to on-going project "Global C ollaboratory on the History of Labour Relations, 1500-2000' hosted at the International Institute of Social History, this project will be deep-rooted in the latest theoretical framework and research methodologies used on the current studies of global labor history and acquire thereby a global dimension. Our project will, in fact, ensure that the global project will have a Portuguese and Lusophone component. This international cooperation will also give our team - through accessing in the abovementioned international framework, including a online database and an online research environment in LifeRay format,- the chance to more efficiently to collect, analyze and make available structural data on the Portuguese and Lusophone societies and economies that were until now scattered across several continents and in most cases unpublished. Our research team, composed by historians, historical demographers, sociologists and anthropologists, meets the challenges of inter-disciplinary research and internationalization and can efficiently respond to the complexity of questions raised by data collection, processing, analysing and online accessibility in digital database support. The team previous knowledge and studies of the source materials and the themes under scrutiny in our research proposal, are also a guarantee of the success of the project. Here we would like to emphasize the presence of several participants in the global project in our research team, as well as the inclusion of Jan Lucassen, coordinator of the global project, in the international advisory board of our project. The project outputs will include: an open access database on labor relations in Portugal and the Lusophone World in the last two hundred years to be hosted on the IHC webpage, two workshops, several articles in international journals with peer review, two workshops in Portugal and one international conference, and an exhibition on the topic to be held at the Portuguese National Archives Torre do Tombo.
