This project explores how Chinese migrants ageing in Portugal make decisions about where and how to live in later life. It develops a typology of three groups: ageing-in-place migrants (those who migrated earlier in life and grow old in Portugal), late-life family migrants (older adults who relocate for family-related reasons, such as providing care), and retirement migrants (those who choose Portugal as a destination after retirement).
Building on the Aspirations–Capabilities framework proposed by Hein de Haas, the study examines how retirement aspirations—whether to remain, return to China, or live transnationally—are shaped by the interaction between individual desires and structural conditions, including welfare systems, legal status, and healthcare access, as well as family dynamics and intergenerational obligations.
Using qualitative methods, including biographical interviews and ethnographic observation, the research highlights how older migrants negotiate their futures across borders and contributes to debates on ageing, migration, and social policy.
