Underlying this project are the political, economic and cultural dimensions of the globalisation processes, within the scope of which the issue of languages has been emphasised. The aim of this project is develop theoretical and practical contributions on international cultural relations and on the socio-cultural dynamics that are gradually being (re)drawn around the concept of lusophony in a geographical area in which they were, until very recently, regarded as non-existent or disappearing. The question constructed, mobilising contributions from the sociology of culture, of migrations and ethnicity, socio-linguistics and the economy of languages, focuses on two branches of analysis that discuss the "utilitarian, instrumental and functional" relations, on one hand, and "identity, relational and affective" relations, on the other hand, established around the Portuguese language and culture and its "localisation" in 21st-century Macao. An analysis of the local cultural context will enable us to establish a relationship with the global dynamics perceptible in the attention that the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has been giving to the issue of lusophony. Recently, there has been a growing production of discourses and initiatives that show the specificity of the region, focusing on its value as the only place in the world where we can find a meeting of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures. This cultural heritage appears as a resource that the MSAR has been using in building its identity and differences and in using its role as a special administrative region of China as a bridge to the outside, and particularly to the Portuguese speaking countries.
