This thesis analyses the general tendency to devaluate the Humanities, which can be observed in the academic context of several countries and began in the early 1980s. It starts with a reconstitution of this social phenomenon. This done, it seeks to explicate it. It identifies and studies an operative factor, which is considered to be fundamental: the neoliberal ideology. First of all, the impact of neoliberalism on the Humanities is deepened on the basis of the political recommendations issued by several international organisations. An analysis of the institutional context par excellence of the Humanities – the University – follows: its missions are reviewed and the two revolutions that took place in it are examined. This research work explains that the devaluation of the Humanities is, amongst other things, one of the consequences of the Neoliberalism. It shows the singular relevance of this consequence. Cases of valuation of the Humanities are furthermore studied, testified by different social actors, although this is only a secondary tendency.
