Abstract
The talk will focus on the work that we have been developing in ISCTE-IUL about the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) during the design process. Our current research on architecture can be divided into two main themes: i) the study of emotions induced by architectural spaces, ii) the development of tools to be actively used in the design process. To study emotions we have been performing objective studies of emotions induced by architectural spaces, by sensing and statistically analyzing some physiological signals of users while walking through pre-defined locations in spaces designed for an immersive Virtual Environment, in a lab setting (http://istar.iscte-iul.pt/index.php/LABS), and correlate such classification with subjective post-experimental questionnaires. We are also researching about how can digital tools, namely VR and AR, be used during all the stages the design process. I’ll show some examples of our work which we develop in a multidisciplinary team composed by architects, computer scientists and psychologists. This collaboration promotes the development of a more holistic approach towards research, enabling our team not to focus only on a specific area of knowledge, but to have a broader overlook on the research problems, by applying a system thinking process. * Available at http://istar.iscte-iul.pt/index.php/ProjectsVR#inducemotion * Available at http://istar.iscte-iul.pt/index.php/ProjectsVR#viarmodes and http://istar.iscte-iul.pt/index.php/ProjectsAR#ARforBuildingDesign
