Abstract/Resumo
With greater access to digital technologies, which expanded the possibilities for young people to gain visibility, a new Afrodiasporic aesthetic emerged in Portugal in the early 2000s, reinforced by the cultural influences of the “Black Atlantic” and the idea of a “transnational ghetto”. The consolidation of a Black artistic scene (musical, visual, and performative) in the Portuguese capital exemplifies this dynamic, destabilizing discourses that either render Afro-descendant populations invisible or marginalize them. In this presentation, I intend to discuss the influence of Afro-diasporic aesthetics on the production of new knowledge, identities, and imaginaries, as well as their implications in countering a hegemonic vision of Portuguese identity constructed through the lens of whiteness.
