Abstract
A socially and politically just transition towards a post–fossil fuel
future requires a critical reassessment of dominant paradigms in global
knowledge production. Agroecology offers a powerful interdisciplinary framework
that integrates scientific, practical, and political dimensions to address
contemporary ecological and socio-economic challenges. Despite its
transformative potential, the academic and practical impact of Agroecology
remains underutilized. This paper argues that Agroecology challenges
entrenched assumptions held by political and economic elites, therefore it
expands the horizons of activism, public policy design, and anti-consumerist
worldviews. By linking Agroecology with Ecological Economics, Degrowth, and
International Relations, the study situates the field within broader debates on the
Global South–Global North divide. These conceptual frameworks help interpret
global governance structures through dual perspectives such as centre–
periphery, public–private, and individual–collective dynamics. Agroecology is
framed as part of a broader metamodern wave of transformative thought. Within
this perspective, ancestral knowledge systems—particularly those of Indigenous
and traditional communities—interact with contemporary scientific approaches to
promote resilience, holistic thinking, and regenerative practices. The paper
concludes that Agroecology holds significant potential to influence research and
education, public policy and collective mindsets, fostering a just ecological
transition at both local and global scales.
