Abstract
Uma condição de efectividade da democracia é um conhecimento adequado das instituições que estruturam uma colectividade, partilhado entre os membros desta comunidade. Numa sociedade complexa, que desenvolveu ao longo dos séculos um direito complexo, este conhecimento ganha em ser desenvolvido aproveitando as ferramentas das ciências. Por sua vez, elementos de conhecimento produzidos por especialistas da investigação sobre a realidade social, devem adequadamente partilhados com não especialistas. São estes os dois desafios principais aos quais a sociologia deve responder para poder contribuir para poder contribuir para a democracia. E poderá defender-se que se trata de um contributo indispensável.
