(English) Extensive studies on literacy in Portugal: An appraisal

Em Portugal, a investigação sobre literacia tem um marco inicial bem definido: o Estudo Nacional de Literacia. Neste artigo, revisita-se essa investigação, assim como os principais desenvolvimentos que se lhe seguiram. Começa-se por enquadrar o projeto no contexto mais alargado dos estudos internacionais de avaliação de competências de adultos, destacando a sua singularidade e também a partilha de quadros concetuais e modos de operacionalização. Quase trinta anos após os estudos iniciais, a sociedade e a investigação extensiva sobre as competências dos adultos sofreram consideráveis alterações, representando o PIAAC, o programa internacional atualmente em curso, uma oportunidade para atualizar o conhecimento sobre a literacia da população adulta em Portugal. ____ In Portugal, literacy research has a well-defined starting point: the National Literacy Study. This article revisits that research, as well as the main developments that followed it. It begins by contextualising the project in the wider context of international surveys on adult competencies, highlighting its uniqueness and also the sharing of conceptual frameworks and modes of operationalisation. Almost thirty years after the initial studies, both societies at large and the extensive research on adult skills and competencies have undergone considerable changes, and PIAAC, the international programme currently underway, represents an opportunity to update knowledge about the literacy of adult population in Portugal.
