Abstract
Generation Z, comprising young people born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, now represents the largest demographic group in Africa. With a median age of around 19, this generation is emerging as a sociopolitical force capable of reshaping entrenched power structures. This essay examines Generation Z’s impact on African politics, its challenge to gerontocratic regimes, and its influence on electoral processes, particularly in countries with Muslim majorities. Cases such as Tanzania and Cameroon illustrate how a digitally mobilized youth has questioned electoral fairness. The analysis also highlights how social media has become a tool for political engagement and resistance, as well as the tension between aging elites and a generation demanding transparency, inclusion, and opportunity.
