Recently, the concepts of autocracy and democracy have become prevalent in public discourse, raising the question of how different political regimes can impact a nation's foreign policy. In Western countries, democracy is often associated with liberal democracy, while autocracy is linked with dictatorship. Nevertheless, recently, extreme-right populist movements have gained political relevance in Western democratic countries. In this paper, we aim to explore how these new movements can impact our democracies' foreign policy. Besides exploring the various theoretical perspectives on this issue and applying them to the contemporary trends in state action in the international arena, we will examine how extreme-right populist movements can impact a state's foreign policy options, especially in the context of a changing multilateralism, decreasing unilaterality, and an increasingly multipolar world. Empirical observations of the existing mechanisms of paradiplomacy, diplomacy, multilateralism and international projects will inform our analysis.
