Abstract/Resumo
Focused on the current mismatch between the Humanities and the University, this paper has three objectives. Firstly, we intend to show how the Humanities have been devaluated in the academic context of several countries. This phenomenon began in the early 1980s. Then, it is our purpose to point out what is lost when humanities are neglected in this way. Lastly, as a necessary condition for the success of a future strategy promoting these subjects, we seek to explain the observed generalized tendency. The neoliberal ideology emerges as one of its operative factors, hampering the holistic view of education that was strengthened by the 1998 UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education. The ambitions and recommendations for higher education, emanated from this conference, did not make us suspect that today we could be so worried about the place of the Humanities in the University and in society.
