This special issue explores the transformation of the Portuguese electorate, focusing on the rise of political fragmentation and shifts in voter behaviour from 2002 to 2024. The typical elector now participates more in elections, is less likely to vote for mainstream parties, more likely to choose a right-wing party than a left one, and increasingly supports the radical right. While Portugal long appeared resistant to European trends, the 2024 legislative elections marked a turning point, with the radical right party Chega securing 18 per cent of the vote and 50 parliamentary seats. Drawing on extensive survey data, the articles analyse ideological shifts, affective polarisation and media framing, highlighting Portugal’s rapid adaptation to a broader European electoral realignment and democratic change in Southern Europe.

Our colleague André Freire was closely involved in the initial stages of the preparation of this Special Issue before his sudden passing in October 2024. We dedicate this volume to his memory.
