Abstract
The Portuguese Navy has established a Security and Health Policy in the Work and Environment of the Navy, providing guidelines for the units on land and for ships, contributing to good waste management and environmental protection. This case study intends to complete the analysis of the waste management of the Portuguese Navy ships presented in [17, 18, 19]. The study is restricted to some residues addressed in Annexes I, IV and V of Marpol 73/78 [11]1 . Methods and forms of how the storage and treatment of ship waste is carried out, the existing equipment, its operational status and whether there is an on-board waste management plan were assessed. However, it is important to take into account the knowledge and cooperation of the military on board for the environment. With such purpose a questionnaire was build and implemented to the garrison of some selected NRP ships after the permission of the Commander of Portuguese Surface Fleet. In [20] was applied an exploratory factorial analysis so we could identify the major questions contributions to the latent variables that explain literacy about waste management in ships. Here we take into consideration such variables
extending the approach done in [20] and establish some relations with environmental education, rank, and other socio-demographic details using a MANOVA approach. Knowledge, attitude and practice are
analyzed in detail.
