Abstract
The Lisbon Cruise Terminal is located in a privileged and rare part of riverside margin where the city’s relationship with the river is not interrupted by the railway line. The intervention
set out with the aim of creating an urban green space, ofering the population a unique possibility to enjoy the waterfront. The building, volumetrically compact, was designed in such
a way that it would form an integral part of this park and preserve the memory of the old Jardim do Tabaco dock. It emerges as a large, covered space, through which the cruise-liner passengers arrive below and depart above. A route traces its way through the whole until its roof, which — in an abstract topography — promotes a dialogue with the natural amphitheatre of the city’s Alfama district, thus sublimating the perception of the city. This project ended up finding continuity through
two of Carrilho da Graça’s interventions in the adjacent spaces of Portas do Mar (2012–2018) and Doca da Marinha (2012–2021), which considered together represent the current century’s most important public space intervention to date in Lisbon.
