Abstract
This work reflects on heritage neglected in rural areas and, in a way, should intervene while respecting memory and identity. Donated in 1169 by D. Afonso Henriques to the Templars, Quinta da Cardiga, together with the castles of Almourol, Ceras and Zêzere, constituted the Tagus' defence belt. With the extinction of the Order of the Temple, the property passed to the Order of Christ's domain. The project for the whole farm, including the palace, the barn, the chapel, and the cloister, is attributed to the architect João de Castilho and is currently considered national heritage by the SIPA. This set underwent several changes, the most recent being in the 20th century, during the life of the current heirs. Now the buildings are unused and require no maintenance. A careful reading of the place is proposed, focusing on past and present experiences that reveal its soul, to seek an architectural response that respects its pre-existence and continues its essence, valuing the territory and its historical Templar connection. As a result of this research, the program is a therapeutic tourism unit for users with psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and burnout, where the locale’s art, by embracing the silences and sounds of nature, will bring new meaning to their lives- a rebirth.
