Abstract/Resumo
As part of the UN’s International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralism (2026) the Gender Working Group stresses the importance of equality in pastoralism. For herder women themes of family, work, schooling and marginality resonate across African and Asian drylands. As environmental, economic and development pressures impact herding women are essential to its continuity. In Mongolia, a prominent pastoralist nation, the role of rural women in household decision-making, livelihood production and community contributions has received little study. In a series of interviews in two rural districts this study explores the practice and knowledge of female herders with a focus on their daily lives. Findings reflect pastoralism in a time of social and livelihood transition. Nature, livestock and tradition were valued whilst family and work responsibilities were arduous. Reflecting perceived challenges and opportunities, experienced herders encouraged daughters to pursue education. Whether growing up in the socialist era or appreciating today’s conveniences, women’s commitment to herding is a vital part of the country’s past nomadic heritage and future direction. As social roles and environmental uncertainty reconfigure pastoralism, female herders are at the forefront of changing rural communities in Mongolia. The next evolution may ask ‘is there a role for educated female herders?’
