Abstract
This paper extends James C. Scott's model of 'resistance' to the sphere of culinary practices, and proposes that an ethnic group may 'resist' simply by the pure fact of persisting over time as a distinct population. Some specific examples of how this occurs among the Kristang population of Portuguese Eurasians in Malacca are examined, comparing a series of elements of Kristang cuisine with Indian, Malay, and Chinese cooking.
