Abstract
Between the highway and the ridge line of the hill, in a quite unstructured area of the city, emerges the School of Communication and Media Studies of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, protecting an elevated square from the noise and aggressiveness of the surroundings. Located on the levels below the square are the auditorium, the studios, the library and other acoustically-demanding facilities, while rooms for students, teachers and staf are on the levels above. This work, “a volume that is made to vibrate through small details”, represents a condenser that synthesizes two engines of Carrilho da Graça’s projects that had a particular impact on his early works: the analysis of the territory’s topography and the reference to Russian Avant-Garde.
