Abstract
Pediatric cancer engenders significant psychosocial impact on patients and their families. Hospital Clowning (HC), as a healthcare approach, may represent a contribute to lessen the difficulties that prevail in the course of illness and hospitalization processes. Despite the globally positive evidences regarding the effects of HC interventions in pediatrics in general, very few evidence exist as regards to these effects in pediatric oncological settings, and specifically during chemotherapy treatment. In this communication, the authors share preliminary results regarding a quasi-experimental (ongoing) study, where the HC?s physical (on pain, nausea and fatigue) and psychological (affective state and arousal) effects on children/adolescents receiving chemotherapy were studied. The study involve children/adolescents (from 8 to 15 years old), and their caregivers, receiving outpatient chemotherapy in three Portuguese oncological hospitals.
