Abstract
The future of urban planning and urbanism will have an impact on the development of present and future cities. Current research conducted at SPLACH-Spatial Planning for Change, a research project financed by Programme Compete 2020 has exposed a number of challenges and constrains for the revision of current urban planning policies and approaches to land use. In particular, for those that have a direct impact on the food system, which is strategic for the functioning of the urban system.
This presentation will focus on two specific dimensions of such challenges and constrains namely the spatial dimensions of urban planning (urban form) but also on its intrinsic metabolic dimension (urban metabolism of cities).
To do that a number of examples retrieved from an ongoing analysis of Lisbon Metropolitan Area Land Uses related to the food system functioning, versus its metabolic performance will be exposed and discussed. Finally, the conclusions will aim to add some light into the contributions of urban form to promote a sustainable transition of current food systems functioning and guide future urban policies to engage with a necessary sustainability vision for the future city.
