Abstract
The rapid touristification of the city of Lisbon (Portugal) has been accompanied by a sharp touristification of its nightlife at the spatial, economic and social levels. Based on in-depth ethnography carried out in the former red-light district of Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, this chapter examines how the expansion of tourist apartments, hotels and new hotel projects in this area has not only entailed the “death” of the traditional nightlife in this former red-light district of downtown Lisbon but also the disappearance of those affective atmospheres that had characterized the nightlife of Cais do Sodré for decades. Throughout the chapter, and especially in the section dedicated to discussion of the results and presentation of conclusions, we argue that the disappearance of both the traditional nightlife venues and their affective atmospheres represents the loss of the local community's tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
