Abstract/Resumo
The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the “de jure” and “de facto” standard modeling language for software systems. It has been updated regularly since its inception, is being taught in universities all over the world and has been used extensively as a basis for Model-Driven Development (MDD) research initiatives. This talk will provide a survey of the “UML World” and how it has been used. The pros and cons of UML in the context of model-driven development will be discussed, with a focus on the comparison with domain specific languages (DSLs) and its role on specifying transformations. Model-driven generative approaches for software development, nowadays dubbed as “low code" or "no code" and some ot its portuguese success histories, will be overviewed. The speaker will also share some of his experience in bridging the gap between research and teaching graduate and undergraduate students in UML-based MDD topics.
