Abstract
Scholars examining precapitalist societies—from Karl Polanyi to Marcel Mauss to Marshall Sahlins and David Graeber—have debunked the economists’ myth of an original barter economy based on tit-for-tat exchange. Demonstrating the precedence of direct social relations in sustaining lives and communities, they have exposed this myth as an attempt to naturalize capitalism, as if the exchange of equivalents and its attendant requisites of competition and egoism were primordial and rooted in human nature.
