Abstract
New investments in wind and solar power are key to advancing the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. While these technologies bring global benefits, they also generate local externalities. The R3EA Project, within which this study is conducted, focuses on assessing these externalities in Portugal’s Centro Region, where RES infrastructure is highly concentrated. Given the scarcity of studies adopting a holistic perspective, this work aims to address this gap by utilizing systems thinking. It involves the construction of a systemigram, where the system represents the relationship between new investments in wind and solar energy, the achievement of a sustainable energy system, and all the factors and stakeholders that influence it. In this case, the analysis is developed to understand, based on the literature, the impact of social acceptance on investments in wind and solar technologies, the importance of energy justice, and the role of local authorities.
