Joana S. Marques is a sociologist, tenured researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) and invited auxiliary professor at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of São Paulo (2016); a Master's in Social and Solidarity Economy (2010) and a postgraduate diploma in Data Analysis in Social Sciences (2011), both from ISCTE-IUL; and a degree in Sociology from the University of Porto (2004), including a one-year exchange at the University of Bergen. She has a professional trajectory in social research, with a focus on the areas of labour studies, culture, solidarity economy, and mobilities.

She was a Marie-Curie Fellow from 2020 to 2021 and has contributed to various national and international projects (including projects funded by the European Commission’s DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the, Creative Europe, FCT, CAPES), with fieldwork conducted across Europe, Africa and Latin America. She is author and co-author of various articles in the fields social and solidarity economy, labour studies, artistic work, mobilities, development studies, and social methodologies. She is a member of the A3S collective and of the Portuguese Association for Political Economy (EcPol), where she previously served on the board.
