Scientific production, internationalisation and gender inequalities in Portuguese-speaking countries: case studies from Brazil and Portugal
Researcher
This project aims to analyse gender inequalities in the internationalisation of scientific production in Brazil and Portugal. Both countries have globally stood out for advancing women's participation in science. However, studies show that various types of inequalities can persist in academia even in environments with progress, such as gender segregation among knowledge areas, characterized in the literature as horizontal concentration, or the asymmetric distribution of positions of power, known as vertical concentration. The main questions that guide this investigation are: Are there gender patterns in professional trajectories and research communication choices? What asymmetries can we identify in the internationalisation trends and the impact of science produced in these countries? We explore the hypothesis that women achieve less visibility than men abroad because they are affected by the gender division of scientific work, which places them in less prestigious themes and activities in the field. We propose conducting case studies of Brazilian and Portuguese scientific communities using quantitative and qualitative approaches, with primary and secondary data sources and programming packages. The first stage of the research consists of developing large databases with demographic surveys of the scientific populations. We also collect information on the publication records of researchers and bibliometric indicators. Next, we select disciplines to delve into specific trajectories, adopting prosopography as a method. It is worth noting that in the case of Brazil, this research benefits from already systematized work accumulated and disseminated on platforms such as the "Atlas Digital das Ciências Sociais" and the GEMAA webpage, "Mulheres na ciência brasileira". The choice of countries is also justified because they both suffer jointly from low circulation abroad of their research and represent the Portuguese language in their continents. Although the two countries ...
