After completing my Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate degree at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, I started working on my Computer Science and Engineering MSc at the same university. Considering my interests in the BSc, I decided to specialize in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) area. Soon, I was offered the position of Trainee at INESC-ID to work with the researchers in the Scientific Area of Graphics and Interaction (GI) (formerly known as the Visualization and Intelligent MultiModal Interfaces group). The initial contact with a research environment sprung my curiosity. Afterward, I started to develop my multi-disciplinary MSc dissertation at the intersection of HCI, physiological computing, game design, and machine learning.
With the end of my MSc, I continued my research path in 2017 when I began my Ph.D. as a Junior Researcher at INESC-ID within the GI group. I started to deepen my studies in Information Visualization (InfoVis) to understand better how to help users discover, explain, and form decisions based on the information conveyed through visual encodings. However, I soon realized that individual differences played a crucial role in the process and that researchers could leverage the manifestation of these factors towards building technology more helpful and reliable by making it adapt itself to user personality. I dedicated my doctoral dissertation to understanding the development of personality-aware information visualization systems to improve user interaction and decision-making. While conducting my Ph.D., I have also worked as a Teaching Assistant at IST and an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Advanced Technologies (ISTEC), teaching (and responsible for) three computer science and engineering courses.
Now, I am an Assistant Researcher at Business Research Unit (BRU-IUL), working in the Data Analytics department. My key research lines are (i) analyzing the presence of cognitive biases in the decision-making supported by information visualization; and (ii) investigating which factors are relevant to trust-building with information visualization techniques. My research activity allowed me to publish 23 peer-reviewed scientific papers. Overall, I have written one book chapter, nine journal papers, and 13 conference papers (twelve international, one national). From those, I highlight the ten papers in Core A*/A or Scimago Q1/Q2 venues in the last five years: Elsevier Personality and Individual Differences (Q1), Journal of Biomedical Informatics (Q1), Technology, Knowledge, and Learning (Q1), Learning Environments Research (Q1), IEEE VIS (Core A), Computers and Graphics (Q2) x3, Personal and Ubiquitous Computing (Q2), and Information Visualization (Q2).
