CV Summary
Valerio Simoni has over twenty years of teaching and research experience in disciplinary and interdisciplinary institutions in the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Switzerland. Thematically, his work addresses contemporary societal transformations linked to transnational forms of mobility (notably tourism and migration), with extensive field research expertise in Latin American and Southern European countries.
Graduated in Social Anthropology at the University of Neuchâtel (2004, Switzerland), he holds a PhD from Leeds Metropolitan University (2009, UK). Dr. Simoni has been Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Research in Anthropology (2010-2014, Portugal) and Research Fellow at the Geneva Graduate Institute (2014-2017, Switzerland). Between 2018 and 2023, he was Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant project "BETLIV" (2018-2023). He is currently Senior Research Fellow at the Global Migration Centre, Research Associate at the Albert Hirschman Centre for Democracy, and Visiting Professor at the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, Geneva Graduate Institute, as well as Research Associate at the Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA-IUL) at ISCTE, Portugal.
Dr. Simoni has authored over forty peer-reviewed publications, including an award-winning monograph and several encyclopedia entries and highly cited articles in top-tier international social science journals. Promoting network creation and knowledge dissemination, he has led a broad range of research, teaching, as well as service and outreach activities, including as co-convenor of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) Anthropology and Mobility Network (2014-2018).
In terms of teaching, training, and outreach, in the last fifteen years, Dr. Simoni has designed and delivered about twenty University courses (from BA to PhD level), and Summer Schools and Lifelong training programmes, and supervised over thirty PhD dissertations and MA theses. As Faculty Lead for Interdisciplinary Applied Research Projects at the Geneva Graduate Institute, he has coordinated over twenty partnerships between student teams and national and international organizations (e.g., IOM, ILO, UNHCR, OHCHR, WFP, Save the Children, UNI Global Union), developing an extensive professional network among IOs, INGOs, and other institutional partners.
In addition to his scholarly appointments, Valerio currently acts as Consultant for the United Nations’ Network on Migration and for the Office of Integration and Citizenship of the Canton of Geneva, where he leads a project on the history and contemporary developments of Portuguese migration to this Swiss region.
