Communication in climate activism and the public debate on climate change in Portugal
Communication in climate activism and the public debate on climate change in Portugal
Description

Climate activism has become increasingly present in promoting public debate on climate change. This research analyzes the role of activist communication in producing visibility, shaping discourse, and influencing social and political perceptions in Portugal around the climate issue. The analysis is developed along three interconnected axes: (i) media coverage of climate activism in the Portuguese press, using multimodal analysis; (ii) the discursive reactions of Portuguese politicians to activist actions, focusing on moments of high political visibility, examined through Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA); and (iii) the internal perspective of climate activism, based on participant observation of the ways in which actions are planned, executed, and evaluated by the activists themselves, in terms of their communicational effects. The goal is to discover the contribution of activist communication in Portugal to raising awareness about climate issues.
