COM4LGD
Communities for Local Green Deals
Description

The innovative solution COM4LGD proposes as the way forward towards a more sustainable, just, democratic and inclusive future for the EU and addressing the two priorities is the focus on cooperation and community, i.e. citizens organising, acting - and living - together. Community is understood in three ways: a social group whose members share a specific material living context; in the political sense of a group sharing the same governing body; and as a group intentionally bound together by a collective commitment to certain foundational values (in particular, socio-environmental justice). Community building, together with the dynamic process of commoning and the stewardship of common-pool resources (land, water, knowledge, self-organising practices etc.) carry emancipatory potential in reframing the value and social relationships system, while aiming to redress current exploitative tendencies. Due to the diversity of organisational forms established for their just inclusive, participatory governance - embedded in the everyday practice of doing things in common, they hold a potential for radical transformation rooted in the care for communities, life, work, and society as a whole (Angelis, 2017).

Challenge

COM4LGD aims to implement the objective of promoting the participation and active involvement of citizens’ of all genders, and of networks representing grassroots communities engaged in sustainability action to the civic life of the EU. The three issues of climate and environmental crisis, challenges to democratic processes, and gender inequality intersect and fuel each other, while they also transgress the national borders of the EU member states. As such, in order to be able to tackle them effectively it is necessary to address them concomitantly, and implement actions in this direction across the EU, which this project will do. Targeting and bringing together diverse citizens from all 27 EU member states and creating inclusive contexts for them to make known and publicly exchange their views in the areas of sustainability action and democratic participation will create a sense of unity when faced with common, complex and intersecting issues, and contribute to a sense of belonging to the EU and identification with the European values this project is grounded upon: justice, sustainability, gender equality, fundamental rights, and democracy. One of the target groups of this project is thus the general public in all 27 member states (target group E).
