At a time when all of Europe, Portugal included, is confronted with the issue of refugees fleeing armed conflicts and political and religious persecution, it becomes pertinent to understand how the country dealt with similar situations in the past. The period selected focuses on the first decade of António de Oliveira Salazar’s “Estado Novo”, a time when Portugal faced a massive influx of refugees seeking to escape the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and the Second World War (1939–1945). As the “Estado Novo” was an authoritarian regime, closed off and wary of contact with the outside world, it is particularly interesting to examine how it managed to deal with the unexpected situation it encountered. From this perspective, the development of this thesis will focus primarily on the actions of the Portuguese police forces regarding the entry of refugees into the country, as well as on the reception they received, both from the government and from the Portuguese population.
