NEXUSNET
NETWORK ON WATER-ENERGY-FOOD NEXUS FOR A LOW-CARBON ECONOMY IN EUROPE AND BEYOND, CA20138
Description

An international network of researchers is working with policymakers and the business sector to better understand how the water-energy-food Nexus fosters policy coherence in the domains of water, energy and food, supporting the transition towards a circular and low-carbon economy in Europe. Focus is on job creation, enhancing wellbeing and care for the environment. The Nexus concept is tested at different scales (i.e. local, regional, national, European), while the international dimension is explored through the involvement of international proposers. More Nexus-compliant practices are foreseen through a knowledge sharing hub at European level and beyond. Public-private initiatives pave the path for Nexus compliant practices, building on network members’ advice. NEXUSNET will deliver examples of nexus compliant decision making, and recommendations to best achieve them, to come-up with an overview of Good Nexus Practices in Europe (policy coherence, Nexus-compliant practices and more coherent nexus evaluations). Transdisciplinary approaches are adopted to test Nexus compliant practices with the involvement of relevant stakeholders, while interaction and engagement with current and finished Nexus-related projects will be pursued. Academic Nexus knowledge will be translated into practical and applicable knowledge for the private sector or policy makers. A series of intense knowledge transfer and dissemination actions are planned to ensure that the network will have a significant impact in Europe and beyond.

Challenge

The main aim of NEXUSNET is to empower collaborations between European Union (EU) and international researchers and stakeholders with the objective to synthesize the existing empirical Nexus research, and to define a concerted research agenda that promotes an integrated approach and produces an intellectual toolkit, demonstrating a clear link to improved resource management and governance outcomes that underlie the value of Nexus. This is an urgent need due to expected further intensification of resource scarcity and the need for increased efficiency in resource management under Global and Climate Change.

Approach

NEXUSNET will focus on filling the knowledge and outcome gap, by better connecting with decision-makers and resource managers, emphasizing participatory approaches, and contributing to capacity building. This COST Action will aim at defining and standardizing in a systematic way the knowledge and data produced on the Nexus to design clear implementation guidelines that will promote its coherence. The ambition of NEXUSNET is to compile background information on Nexus empirical research and relevant data in order to provide the basis for a common conceptual framework and a toolkit including a portfolio of diverse case studies and a series of Living Documents (LDs) to ensure

coherent mapping and assessment across Europe and beyond and across scales.

Academic Research Impact

NEXUSNET will work synergistically with a range of global agreements that are implemented in the European context, such as the SDGs, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). Its agenda constitutes an extremely direct entry point to the facilitation of the SDGs, since it inherently aims directly at 8 of them: food security, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, industry innovation and infrastructure, climate action, life bellow water and on land and partnerships for the goals. At the same time, there are many indirect pathways that NEXUSNET can offer a remarkable impact to all SDGs.
