The project proposal focuses on the future development of the human workforce, with the aim of exploring critical aspects related to its future development.
The technological advances have significantly reshaped industries and lead to the emergence of novel job roles and unimagined employment opportunities that were just until recently unimaginable. The anticipated changes in the labour force will therefore require a corresponding change in the skills, competencies, and capacities of people actively participating in the labour market. In addition, it is critical to address the compelling task of reshaping workplace dynamics and prioritizing workforce well-being, as this aspect becomes increasingly important, especially in the face of labour shortages. By taking a comprehensive view of these interrelated aspects, it becomes imperative to address all of the above elements in order to maintain global competitiveness of European countries in an ever-evolving world and contribute to the necessary transformation of the labour market. The project will engage stakeholders in meaningful discussions about future workforce development, the project enables their participation in the policy-making process, which allows for an exchange of views and the co-creation of Europe's future through their valuable contributions. The project will also strengthen participants' awareness of their rights and knowledge of EU policies by examining and sharing lessons learned and best practices related to labour market challenges.
In sum, this project seeks to contribute to empower individuals with relevant skills and knowledge, and foster an environment that encourages sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work future for all.

Portugal has been virtually absent from the vibrant and international debate on the roots and determinants of health inequalities in the 19th and 20th centuries. The few studies conducted on death causes have been based on aggregated data with small territorial disaggregation, focusing on the period after 1920, when the ICD was already implemented. Therefore, we lack a micro-analytical and intergenerational approach to understand to what extent – and how far – individuals' geographic origin, their socio-economic conditions, and public health policies contributed to their longevity. The city of Oporto, a major port city in northern Portugal, is particularly interesting due to its migratory history, with individuals returning from various parts of the Portuguese empire (notably the so-called "Brazilians"), as well as foreigners, such as Galicians and even the British. Furthermore, it is a relevant case study in the European context, as it sheds light on the process of consolidation and development of Liberalism in more peripheral countries (such as Portugal, Romania or Spain, only to mention a few), whose gap with leading countries began to widen precisely in the second half of the 19th century. The empirical data collected for this project is based on burial certificates available online for the entire Porto municipality. These are nominative sources with information on individuals' parentage, profession, place of birth, place of death, and cause of death (coded according to official nomenclatures), totaling approximately 4 million deaths. A team formed by researchers from the GREAT LEAP network affiliated in Portugal and a group of undergraduate and graduate students from Iscte's history program is already engaged in this exciting research.

Scientific recognition of the complex relationships between climate, migration and society has increased in recent years, but it often remains incomplete. Misleading claims about mass migration due to climate change persist both in the academic debate, as highlighted by Boas et al. (2019) and Zickgraf (2020), but especially in the media, the public, and politics. While international migration and climate policy makers increasingly portray climate change as a key driver of migration from the Global South to the Global North, this narrative often simplifies complex realities and often lacks empirical foundation (Black et al., 2011). The militarisation of 'climate migration' is reinforced by public funding programmes that prioritise security concerns over comprehensive understanding, such as funding calls under the Horizon 2020 programme (Piguet et al., 2018). These narratives influence border management measures and migration policies in destination countries and perpetuate the myth of "climate migration" or "climate flight" as a security risk (Trombetta, 2014). The planned project aims to 1) identify reasons for the discrepancy between public perception and research (the current state of knowledge would then have to be analysed in the case school and then the survey would have to deepen this). 2) Identify opportunities for better communication of scientific findings. 3) Anchoring the topic permanently in science. By promoting an objective discussion and sensitisation of young scientists, the public and politicians, awareness of the complex links between climate change and migration should be raised. This will ultimately lead to more informed political decisions and a better public debate on these important issues.
This project includes a three-day Fall School for Master and PhD students at CIES-Iscte.
