Abstract
Machado de Assis (1839-1908), escritor brasileiro, jornalista e crítico literário, epiléptico, gago, oriundo de uma família pobre do Rio de Janeiro, estudante pouco afortunado, órfão de mãe aos 10 anos, aprendiz de tipógrafo, funcionário público, casado, sem filhos, aos 41 anos perde parcialmente a visão, melancólico e triste após a morte da sua esposa, Carolina, escreveu sobre os homens e a sua forma de organizar o mundo. Na sua obra, “O Alienista” publicada em 1882, Assis aborda a concepção da loucura na psiquiatria e como fenómeno social.
