Abstract
Em 1899 declarou-se na cidade do Porto uma surto de peste bubónica (Yersinia pestis), cujo bacilo foi isolado por Alexandre Yersin e Kitasato Shibasaburō em Julho de 1894 após investigação na China, onde a doença era endémica. Esta epidemia traumatizou a vida dos portuenses, pois foram postas em prática medidas sanitárias que deram origem a tensões sociais e políticas relevantes. A doença caracteriza-se pelo aparecimento de bubões resultantes de inflamação dos gânglios linfáticos que podem supurar ou gangrenar, levando à morte. As pulgas dos ratos são os principais veículos do contágio
