Abstract
Este artigo constitui uma tentativa de reconstituição da
história demográfica de Santa Maria ao longo do século xix. A
análise inicia-se com o cômputo de 1800, num momento de pro-
gressiva consolidação das estruturas administrativas açorianas, e
prolonga-se até 1900 e ao IV recenseamento geral da população,
permitindo acompanhar as transformações nos ritmos de cresci-
mento e na distribuição do povoamento, numa perspectiva de
longa duração. Paralelamente, observamos as estruturas demográ-
ficas — nomeadamente, a composição por sexos e idades — e os
comportamentos fundamentais, como a evolução da natalidade,
da mortalidade e dos movimentos migratórios, de modo a com-
preender os mecanismos que sustentaram as diferentes fases da
evolução populacional da ilha
