Abstract
Este é um artigo escrito para a Gazeta da Física, numa edição comemorativa do prémio Nobel da Física de 2020. Pretende-se expor de uma forma clara, recorrendo apenas a conceitos básicos e intuitivos, a enorme importância que os buracos negros tomam na física teórica moderna. São abordados diversos temas, incluindo a teoria de cordas e a correspondência AdS/CFT, dimensões extra, plasmas de quarks e gluões, e supercondutores.
