Ilhas são espaços convencionados. Não existem por si, mas em função de territórios perante os quais se hierarquizam. Podem ser outras ilhas com as quais se articulam segundo critérios administrativos ou geográficos
previamente estabelecidos, constituindo-se então em arquipélagos. Não sendo esta a relação criada, tende-se a situá-las pela comparação objetiva proporcionada pelos dados quantitativos, ou subjetiva, pela experiência
adquirida e transmitida.
