Abstract
Nasceu em Lisboa, na freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Filho de José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage (Deputado e Par do Reino) e de D. Teresa Roma du Bocage. Seu pai nasceu no Funchal em 1823 e foi bacharel em Medicina por Coimbra em 1846, dedicando-se posteriormente à Zoologia e à política. Seu avô paterno, João José Barbosa du Bocage, era primo do poeta Manuel Maria. Devido às suas ideias liberais, esta família emigrou para o Brasil em 1830, voltando a Portugal em 1834.
