Abstract
A enigmática figura do soberano indiano Presbiter Johannes apresenta nesta Carta pseudo-autográfica todo o esplendor do seu maravilhoso e inacessível império, cujas regiões orientais fazem fronteira com o próprio Paraíso terrestre. Em grande medida elaborado sobre dois modelos literários, o Romance de Alexandre e o Apocalipse segundo S. João, este texto latino medieval revela aos seus leitores um imperador ideal e cristomimético: como o Cristo apocalíptico, o Preste João é um intemporal soberano e sacerdote, senhor dos senhores, que governa uma sociedade cristã a um tempo heterogénea e igualitária, onde as maravilhas de todo o tipo florescem entre o milagroso e o monstruoso, entre o quase divino e o quase diabólico.
